The Passionate Redheads may be resting for now, but we're already thinking about the next Relay. Last year it seemed that the "big guys" took over a lot of the heavy fundraising, making it hard for us "little flowers" to compete. I don't see that changing, since the Christmas Relay thing that just ended.
We already devote nearly half the year to fundraising, and I would rather have a fresh and vibrant team effort than to burn out before the season even begins. We did not participate in off season fundraising as a team for this very reason.
I have repeatedly argued with committee members that RFL should take place during winter months, when we're all sitting home on our computers in the evenings. I personally have missed way too many spring and summer evenings with my family because I was raising money for the American Cancer Society. This is not the kind of example I want to set for my (grown) children. ACS has a huge budget, and they don't need my family time sacrificed. Those summer evenings will never come again.
